An accountant and a client across a table

How the partnership works

Six steps, from your firm joining to the advice being in place, with your firm able to see each one in its portal.

The six steps

Your firmEquity & General
  1. 1

    Join as a partner

    Your firm

An Introducer Agreement between your firm and Equity & General, setting out your firm’s commercial model: Ongoing Income or Capital Value. Your firm needs no FCA permissions and no change to its professional indemnity cover.

  2. 2

    See the client’s position

    Your firm

Surplus company cash, an owner past 50, borrowing with no protection, a sale coming up. Your portal shows which clients are in one of those positions and why.

  3. 3

    Make the introduction

    Your firm

You raise it with the client, usually at the year-end meeting. Approved wording is in the portal. You record the introduction there and the portal follows it from then on.

  4. 4

Equity & General’s Account Manager meets your client

    Equity & General

The client’s Equity & General Account Manager contacts them within one working day and is their main point of contact from then on. The first meeting is with the Account Manager and is free. No advice is given on that call. The client also has their own financial planner, who gives the advice. Before the first meeting, the client completes six questions, their priorities in order and a financial health check from the portal, in your firm’s name.

  5. 5

Equity & General gives the advice

    Equity & General

Equity & General makes the recommendation, writes the suitability report and puts it in place. The regulatory responsibility is Equity & General’s.

  6. 6

    Your firm sees each stage

Your firm and Equity & General

Your portal shows each introduction from the first contact to the advice being in place, with the recommendation recorded.

The first ninety days

Week 1

The agreement

An Introducer Agreement between your firm and Equity & General, setting out your firm’s commercial model. Your engagement letters and professional indemnity cover do not change.

Week 2

Your Partnership Manager and your client list

You meet your Equity & General Partnership Manager, your firm’s point of contact. You put your client list into your portal, and it shows which clients have something to plan.

Weeks 3 to 4

Your team

An hour’s training for your client managers on the six moments, the approved wording, and where regulated advice starts.

Month 2

First introductions

Two or three clients you already had in mind. You can sit in on the client’s first meeting with the Account Manager if you want to.

Month 3

The review

A review with your partnership director: which clients were introduced, what was recommended, and what is in progress.

After that

Introductions from the year-end meetings

Introductions come out of year-end meetings. The portal re-checks Companies House and shows what has changed each week.

Who does what

What your firm says

  • What you can see in the accounts and the filings
  • That an area needs a financial planner’s attention
  • An offer of an introduction, and the introduction itself
  • Staying in the room for the conversation
  • Receiving reporting on what was recommended

What Equity & General does

  • Naming a product, provider, fund or wrapper
  • Recommending a contribution, transfer or withdrawal
  • Advising on the merits of one option against another
  • The suitability report and the regulatory responsibility
  • Answering “what would you do in my position?”

Your firm can describe what it sees in the accounts. Recommending what the client should do about it is regulated advice, and that is for the financial planner. If a client asks what they should do, the answer is that the financial planner will go through it with them.

An adviser meeting a client

What your client experiences

The introduction comes from you, in a meeting the client was already having, about something in their own accounts.

Their Equity & General Account Manager contacts them within one working day and is their main point of contact. The first meeting is with the Account Manager, by video or in person, and is free. No advice is given on that call. The advice comes from the client’s own financial planner, and if there is nothing to do, the financial planner says so.

Where there is, the client gets a written recommendation. The advice, the suitability report and the regulatory responsibility sit with Equity & General.

Your firm carries on with the accounts and tax work.
